‘Charni’ in the local Marathi language means ‘to graze’. And so, this suburb derived its name from grazing lands found over here for cattle and horses. The story goes that, in 1838 the British introduced a ‘grazing fee’ in this area which unfortunately many cattle owners could not afford. It was then that Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy brought some grassland for Rs 2000, and ensured that the cattle grazed without a fee. It was then over period of time, that this locality came to be known as ‘Charni’.
