Mumbai the ‘City of Dreams’ is renowned for a number of popular tourist spots. One among them being the ‘Bandra Bandstand’, also commonly referred to as ‘Bandstand’. Now, for all those new to the city a question that will pop up in the mind is, what exactly is Bandstand? a. What is Bandra Bandstand?
‘A 1.2 km in length walkway’ is the best way to define a popular spot in Mumbai known as Bandstand. Located in Bandra (known as Queen of Suburbs), this ‘Promenade’ situated alongside the ‘Arabian Sea’. Apart for being a popular hangout spot, it also possesses a ‘jogging track’ and a ‘park’. Furthermore, an amphitheater is also located close proximity to this spot.
b. How to reach Bandra Bandstand?
There are a number of local trains and buses available in the city that can be used to reach Bandstand. The nearest local railway station to this spot is Bandra. Furthermore, from the station auto rickshaw service to this promenade is available. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to get to this spot via a rickshaw, and a ride cost about Rs 40. With regards to bus, there are number of BEST services available which connects this spot to most of the major area in the city. However, it is BEST number ‘211’ connects Bandra station to Bandstand.
c. What to do at Bandra Bandstand?
Apart from this promenade being a great hangout spot there are a number of places located in close proximity worth visiting. They are as follows:
- Bandra Fort: Located at the extreme end of the promenade is the Bandra Fort also known as ‘Castella de Aguada’. It was built by the Portuguese in 1640 and provides magnificent view of the overlying Mahim Bay and Arabian Sea. Scenes from bollywood movies such as Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Dil Chahata Hai etc have been shot over here.
- Mount Mary Church: For the ‘spiritually’ inclined the Mount Mary Church located in close proximity to this promenade is worth visiting. Also known as the ‘Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount’, this church located at hillock at an altitude of 80 meters above sea level, it provides for the magnificent view of the adjoining Arabian Sea. Furthermore, this church is so popular that it attracts lakhs of devotees from across the country annually.
d. Bandra Bandstand ‘Walk of Stars’, what is it?:
A ‘2 km’ section honouring ‘Bollywood’ stars has been created in this promenade. This area essentially comprises of 6 bronze statues of famous Bollywood stars. Apparently, this unique concept has been conceived using the famous ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’ as inspiration. This entire project has been funded and managed by media house UTV, who have promoted it through the ‘UTV Stars’ television channel.
