‘Martyr’s Square’ is the literal English translation of a memorial built in South Mumbai called Hutatma Chowk. It is constructed in the Fort Area in close proximity to the Flora Fountain. Furthermore, this square was created to pay tribute to those individuals who while fighting for an independent Maharashtra state, lost their lives due to a violent encounter with the police in 1956. All the individuals killed on that tragic day were members of the ‘Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti’ i.e. a group that initiated and eventually achieved its goal of acquiring an independent Maharashtra state on May 1st 1960.
