Derived from the term ‘Marine Battalion Lines’ is the name of the popular South Mumbai locality known as Marine Lines. It is located alongside the Arabian Sea. Furthermore, this posh residential area comprises of a Muslim cemetery as well as a popular crematorium known as ‘Chandanwadi’. In addition, it is located in close proximity to Churchgate and is home to government agencies such as the Income Tax office.

It was during the early 19th century that the British constructed a military establishment known as ‘Marine Battalion’ in this locality. This institution was later converted to a residential complex for the Indian Air force.It also became extremely popular for buildings constructed using the ‘Art Deco’ style of architecture.

While, Liberty cinema was built by Habib Hoosein. It consists of 1200 seats. However, it was in the year 2005-06 that Metro was converted into a multiplex. The first movie to be released after its revamp was Karan Johar’s magnum opus ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’.

Is a famous Hindu shrine located in this area. It is devoted to Goddess Kalbadevi. Originally located in Mahim, it was reinstalled in this locality. It is extremely popular and visited by a lot of ‘devotees’.
