Thane also colloquially known as ‘Thana’ is a popular cosmopolitan city in India. It is known for a number of beautiful lakes, malls, schools as well as luxurious residential properties. In addition, it is also a part of the ‘Mumbai Metropolitan Region’. It consists of a population of a 1,841,488 and is the ’16th Most Populated City in India’. So, let us then discuss about this city in greater depth.

1. Thane And Its Historical Significance:

It is in the 9th century AD that the city first came into existence, and was referred to as ‘ Shreesthanak’. Furthermore, it was commonly referred to as the ‘Capital of Shilahar Dynasty’. This city has experienced 4 varied dynasties beginning from the Vedic era. These include: Mughal, British, Portuguese, and the Marathas. It was in 1290 AD, that famous traveler Marcopolo visited this city, and claimed that it was among the best cities in the world.

2. Thane And Its Etymology:

The word ‘Thane’ is derived from the Sanskrit term ‘sthāna’ which when translated literally means ‘place’. It has been referred to as ‘Tana, Thana, and Thâṇâ. Apparently, the famous Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta knew this city as ‘Kukin Tana’.

3. Thane, The City Filled With Lakes:

‘Talao Pali, is how the 33 lakes available in this city is referred to as. A few popular ones included are: Kachrali Lake, Upvan Lake, Datiwali Lake, Dawala Lake, Devasar Lake etc and many others. Furthermore, on the banks of the Masunda lake in this city lies the famous ‘Kopineshwar Mandir’, a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Apparently, this temple is supposed to be the ‘oldest’ in the entire district, and was built by Chimajji Appa in 1750.

4. Thane, The Real Estate Hub:

It is due to the exorbitant prices of properties in Mumbai that has led to this city becoming a ‘Real Estate Hub’. In addition, a number of large scale industries  have over the years been shutdown causing a boom in real estate in this locality. So, many popular real estate companies such as: Godrej Properties, Hiranandani Constructions Private Limited, Runwal Builders, Rustomjee, Vihang Group, Piramal Realty, Lodha Group, and Puranik Builders have initiated and completed projects in the city. In fact, in areas such as Ghodbunder Road, Majiwada and Kasarvadavali there are many good residential complexes, schools, healthcare centers, and malls that have suddenly developed.

 

5. Thane, The Shopping Paradise:

The ‘paradigm shift’ from ‘heavy industries to real estate business’ witnessed by this city is a factor that has led to a few malls being developed. The popular few include: Viviana, Koram, R- mall. These malls provide for a wide range of fashion brands such as Shoppers Stop, Marks & Spencer, Charles & Keith, ZARA, Forever 21, Tommy Hilfiger, and Lifestyle. A mall such as Viviana also provides for ‘entertainment’ in the form of a megaplex which comprises of 14 movie screens while, the Koram  comprises of the Inox multiplex.  In addition, the Vivana  is India’s first impaired friendly mall.

6. Thane Schools and Healthcare Centers:

It is the sudden rise of real estate business in the ‘City of Lakes’ that has led to an increase in number of schools. Some of them include: Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School, A.K. Joshi English Medium, Orchids International School, D.A.V. Public School, Podar International School, C.P. Goenka International School, Hiranandani Foundation School, St. Johns Baptist High School and Junior College, and N. L. Dalmia High School. In addition, there are a number of high quality hospitals such as Jupiter, Bethany, and Thane Healthcare that are also available out here.

It is therefore due to the rise of the Real Estate business that Thane, ‘The City Of Lakes’ has become a commercially important city in India.
